Language Managment Articles

Defining  language management

The term ‘Language Management ’  refers to the theory developed mainly by J.V. Neustupný and B.H. Jernudd and later by others.  I should emphasize on the fact  that  the  identity of the theory is based on the set of its theoretical claims rather than on the heading “language management”. I mention this here for two reasons: firstly, certain fundamental features of the theory were published under different labels, especially “the theory of language correction” (this version is dealt with by Cooper 1989: 40f.); secondly, some authors employ the term “language management” without referring to the theoretical propositions of Neustupný, Jernudd and their colleagues; they use the term as more or less synonymous with the expression “language planning”, which is also the approach of Spolsky (2004).

This  blog  tries to  map the frontiers of the emerging language management paradigm in the study and practice of politics of language from the perspectives of theory, method, discipline, and practice. The discussion advances two core arguments.
First, an Africanist interpretation of the discourse of the politics of language that underpins language management brings to the fore the peculiarities of language management within the African space. Second, it is imperative to develop the theoretical and practical advances in language management concurrently, especially in a continent that is known to rely on intellectual advances from other continents.

Three  main theories  are involved  in  language management :

1. The Israeli/American  theory
2. The European/Asia-Pacific theory
3. The African theory

"Can language be managed? And if it can, should it be managed?" (Spolsky, 2009: 261).
Jernudd (2009)stated that "a theory of language management is a goal,
but as of yet, much of its promise has to be understood as a model, and not as a validated truth" (Jernudd, 2009: 245).
